A friendly and fascinating reptile that’s ideal for first-time snake keepers. With its striking patterns, calm temperament, and manageable size, the Royal Python (also called the “Ball Python”) is a true favourite among reptile enthusiasts. Native to West and Central Africa, these gentle constrictors typically grow to 3–5 feet and can live 20–30 years with proper care.
Royal Pythons are one of the most popular pet snakes in the world—and for good reason. Their docile nature makes them easy to handle, and they rarely show aggression. Instead of striking, they tend to curl up into a tight ball when nervous (hence the nickname “Ball Python”).
What makes them so popular, apart from their calm demeanour, is their incredible variety. With hundreds of colour morphs and patterns available, no two Royal Pythons are ever quite the same. Whether you’re into bright banana yellows, deep blacks, or wild pastels, there’s a morph to match every personality.
Despite their exotic looks, Royal Pythons are surprisingly affordable and low-maintenance. They require relatively simple housing, don’t need elaborate lighting, and eat once every week or two. This makes them a great option for keepers looking for an easygoing yet captivating pet.
