A hardy and low-maintenance reptile that’s perfect for first-time keepers. With its gentle nature, quirky behaviours, and wide-eyed charm, the Leopard Gecko is one of the most popular reptiles in the hobby. Growing to around 8–10 inches in length and living up to 15–20 years in captivity, they make a rewarding long-term companion.
Leopard Geckos are great for beginners thanks to their docile temperament and simple care needs. They’re easy to handle, rarely bite, and often seem curious about their environment — especially during the evening when they become most active.
They’re also a lot of fun to observe. From their gentle tail wags to the way they stalk their food, Leopard Geckos have plenty of personality. Some even seem to recognise their owners, coming out when it’s time to eat or explore.
One of the biggest surprises for new keepers is how affordable and easy they are to care for. A basic setup with dry heat, hides, and proper lighting is all you need to create the perfect environment. They thrive in desert-like conditions and don’t require high humidity or complex UVB setups, making them an excellent choice for anyone starting out.
The Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) originates from the arid regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and parts of Iran. Captive-bred and available in a wide range of colours and patterns (known as morphs), each gecko is unique — from bold yellows and spots to rare designer morphs bred for vibrant aesthetics.
