A striking and truly unique reptile, the Yemen Chameleon (also known as the Veiled Chameleon) is a fascinating choice for experienced keepers or dedicated beginners ready to commit to its specialised care. With its tall casque (helmet-like crest), vivid green colouring, and the ability to change shades based on mood and environment, this chameleon is as captivating as it is beautiful.

Yemen Chameleons can grow up to 18–24 inches in length, with males typically larger and more vibrantly coloured than females. They are arboreal and diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day and love to climb — making vertical space, foliage, and branches essential in their enclosure.

While not known for enjoying handling, they are incredible to observe. Their independent, rotating eyes and long projectile tongues make feeding time a real spectacle. Watching them track and strike at their insect prey is an experience unlike any other in reptile keeping.

Though their care is more advanced than other reptiles, it’s very achievable with the right setup. Yemen Chameleons thrive in well-ventilated enclosures with plenty of vertical climbing space, consistent UVB lighting, and daily misting or a dripper to maintain proper hydration. A varied insect-based diet, with occasional leafy greens or fruit for adults, keeps them healthy and active.

Native to the mountainous regions of Yemen and southwestern Saudi Arabia, these chameleons are adapted to hot, humid conditions and are captive bred for the pet trade. With the right care and attention, they can live up to 5–8 years and make a stunning centrepiece to any exotic collection.
