If you’re looking for a visually stunning, active, and intelligent snake, the Coastal Carpet Python could be your perfect match. Hailing from the forests and woodlands of eastern Australia, this subspecies of Morelia spilota is one of the largest in the Carpet Python group—and certainly one of the most eye-catching.

Coastal Carpet Pythons can grow quite large, often reaching 6–9 feet in length, with some even exceeding that in captivity. Their bodies are long and muscular, covered in intricate patterns of black, tan, and gold that help them blend into their natural environment. Each one has a slightly different look, giving them an almost artistic appearance.

Unlike the Ball Python, these snakes are a bit more active and alert, often exploring their enclosures and interacting with their surroundings. They’re known for being highly intelligent and responsive to their environment, which makes them fascinating to observe. That said, they do require confident and consistent handling—especially as juveniles—so they’re best suited for intermediate level keepers.

Despite their larger size and energetic personality, Coastal Carpet Pythons are non-venomous constrictors and can become very tame with regular interaction. They thrive in a spacious, well-heated enclosure and require a diet of appropriately sized rodents or birds, usually every 1–2 weeks depending on age and size.

With a lifespan of 15–20 years, these snakes make a long-term commitment—but one that’s highly rewarding for those who enjoy a more interactive and visually impressive reptile.
