A compact and low-maintenance reptile with a bold look and calm nature, the Kenyan Sand Boa is ideal for anyone looking for a unique and manageable pet snake. With their short, stocky build and vivid orange-and-brown patterning, these burrowing snakes are both attractive and fascinating to keep.

Kenyan Sand Boas remain relatively small, with females reaching up to 2–3 feet and males usually staying under 2 feet, making them a perfect choice for keepers with limited space. Their shy, burrowing lifestyle means you’ll often find them hidden under the substrate, but they can become more active — and even inquisitive — once they’re used to handling.

These snakes are incredibly docile and rarely bite, making them suitable for beginner to intermediate keepers who can provide a simple, warm, and dry enclosure. Their setup should include a deep, loose substrate such as aspen or sand-soil mix to allow natural burrowing behaviour, along with a secure hide and shallow water dish.

Feeding is straightforward — they thrive on a diet of appropriately sized rodents, and most will accept frozen-thawed prey. With regular feeding and proper care, Kenyan Sand Boas can live for 15–20 years or more in captivity.

Native to Kenya and other arid regions of East Africa, these snakes are well-adapted to dry climates and do not require high humidity levels. Their charming personality, manageable size, and unique behaviour make them a popular and rewarding species for both new and seasoned keepers.
